The story: Two well-evolved songwriters with a love for the same musics meet at a Big Star tribute and discover an instant chemistry. They start writing songs together and pretty effortlessly collaborate on enough material for a record or two. The lyrics are a mix of playful and emo with a wonderful harmony of voices and hook-filled melody. If you're expecting Jayhawks, you're more likely to hear Gary's style exhibited in his Golden Smog supergroup side project and songs he's contributed to others---but for sure these are NOT Jayhawk outtakes. Django Haskins' unique but broad palette found on the 4 Old Ceremony albums is evident in the lyrics, while vocally he takes a slightly lower position with Gary's high tenor dominating most but not all the songs. The harmonies are key to bringing the songs up a notch or two. There's just enough fun in the lyrics to remind you that these guys really enjoy making music, and this far into their careers it's refreshing. This record may beguile on the first listen, but in a good way. A couple of hooks will earworm you enough to go back to it and for this listener, it didn't take a lot of listens to be a "grower".
