This is a beautiful graphic novel- every page is fully illustrated, mostly in color, and told through cell format. The reason for the five stars is that this is a wholly original work of art, and puts a whole new spin on the idea of graphic novels. It's an oversize, text-book thick memoir. It's full of sketches and art and words.Where it might not land for some people is the subject matter (fertility, sexuality, life transitions). Whether or not you want a big illustrated book or spend time in an artwork about these is ultimately up to you, but it may influence your opinion of this book overall. But for me, whether or not I relate to the stories behind the words and art is not the issue- it's about appreciating the scope of this work and how different it is from any other graphic novel I've seen before, in both content, structure, and format. I hope it influences a bunch of other artists and writers to share similar expressions of their own life in a similar huge, graphic, colorful format- I'd love to see a big illustated book like this about traveling or gardens or just everyday life without big "transitions". But if this is a book that opens up a door to a new way of sharing people's stories, I'm totally excited about it.
